Flood Situation of Northern areas of Pakistan 2025

Days of heavy rain and floods in northern Pakistan have badly damaged homes, roads, bridges, and farmland. Whole herds of animals have been swept away, leaving families without their main source of income. On August 15 and 16, nonstop monsoon rains hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), causing flash floods and landslides in several areas.

For people already suffering, the situation has now become worse. Many are falling sick with waterborne diseases, and doctors warn that outbreaks could end up taking more lives than the floods themselves. Children are arriving at health centers with diarrhea, stomach infections, malaria, dengue fever, and skin problems. Thousands more with similar illnesses are still stuck in remote areas because roads and bridges have been washed away. Caritas Pakistan’s National Office, together with diocesan offices, has visited the affected northern areas, assessed the situation on the ground, and is carrying out needs assessments to help plan the emergency response.

Reproductive health and mental health needs have also emerged as pressing concerns among the affected communities. According to an early report by the KP Livestock Department, the floods have caused losses of over  in the livestock sector. More than 5,300 animals have died, including goats, calves, cows, buffaloes, and sheep. Poultry farms were also hit hard—Buner alone lost about 9,000 chickens, while over 4,000 more birds died in Bajaur and Swat.
The floods also damaged 336 animal shelters in districts like Mansehra, Shangla, Buner, and Swat, and destroyed fodder worth around Rs286 million.
