6.4. Laudato si
Care for Our Common Home (Laudato Si’) is an appeal from Pope Francis addressed to “every person living on this planet” for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is written with both hope and resolve, looking to our common future with candor and humility. The Encyclical takes its name from the invocation of Saint Francis of Assisi, “Praise be to you, my Lord” which in the Canticle of the Creatures reminds us that the earth, our common home “is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us” (1).
Caritas Pakistan, since the launch of this encyclical letter in 2015, has taken certain initiatives to complement Laudato si through different projects and programs. This commitment to care for our common home will continue by building staff capacities, creating awareness among communities and taking other practical steps to protect our planet.
6.5. Sustainable Development Goals
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.
